SHILLONG: With an aim to bridge the gap between the abandoned children and the police, the State Police Department organized an Interaction programme with them here on Wednesday.

“Being close to them, the department will get to know and understand the problems faced by them in their day to day living”, Additional Superintended of Police (Crime) Vivek Syiem said.

Speaking to reporters after the programme, Syiem said there is a need to strengthen the relationship between these children and the police adding through them, the department can also have a glimpse of the crime scenario in the city

While interacted with these children it was learnt that most of them come from a single parent family or broken family and do not even have a proper place to live in. Having no one to look after them, they have to find their own way to earn money either to support the family or for themselves.

“I live in a parking lot and work as a rag picker and I spend my money on food and intoxicants”, a street boy present in the programme revealed.

Others who spoke include members from the Juvenile Boys Home, Reach Shillong Ministry, Child Line and Sanker who highlighted the various aspects to deal with such children and to help them live a healthy life.
