SHILLONG: The police are not treating Swami Damodarananda, who is facing a Rs 60-lakh embezzlement charge, as an absconder as yet.
Swami Damodarananda has been suspended and removed from the post of secretary of Bharat Sevashram Sangha Shillong. Police said they have registered a case and would wait for a certain time.
He has assured the police that he would return to Shillong and has denied his involvement in any embezzlement.
“We will wait for a certain time and if he does not show up, we will treat him accordingly,” a police official said.
Recently, the headquarters of the Sangha, after receiving complaints of misappropriation, immediately called for accounts of last 10 years for verification and it was found that these were in order and there was no discrepancy in its funds.
However, it came to their notice that Swami Damodarananda had borrowed money from a devotee, who gave it on an agreement signed on stamp paper.
It was also revealed that he managed some funds in his personal name from some devotees but not in the name of Bharat Sevashram Sangha.
According to bank statements, Swami Damodarananda transferred Rs 60 lakh to Provat Kumar Misra, Juthika Misra and Sumit Misra of Burdwan, West Bengal, from his personal account in a nationalised bank here and also from other sources.
