SHILLONG: Chief Minister Conrad Sangma has said that the pace of all government projects has picked up tremendously in the last few months and that he is personally monitoring these.
Meghalaya is one state where delay in government projects is the most common with hardly any of these ever completed within the scheduled timeline.
The delay in execution of the projects often leads to cost overrun and some of these have been delayed over the years. These include the cancer wing in Shillong Civil Hospital, Shillong and Tura medical colleges, Umsning bypass, Interstate Bus Terminus at Shillong besides major highways to name a few.
“We have a commitment to complete these major projects at the earliest,” he said.
He said that there were many road projects which were just lying for the past several months, but now work has started on many.
He also said that the construction of Tura Medical College has started while work is on for Mawlai bypass and even the ISBT at Tura will be handed over to the Transport department shortly.
One shining example of delay in completing government projects is the proposed building of Meghalaya Legislative Assembly on which work has not started even after 17 years since it was gutted.
