SHILLONG: The BJP in Meghalaya in the past few months has witnessed several leaders resigning from the party for different reasons, but party leader AL Hek appeared unperturbed and dubbed those quitting as mere “ aaya ram, gaya ram”.
Last year, two BJP leaders from East Jaintia Hills, Robinus Syngkon and and Justine Dkhar, who contested last year’s elections on party tickets resigned.
Soon after the passage of the Citizenship (Amendment) Bill, BJP minority leader, Sofior Rahman along with some others too, left the party
More recently, BJP Yuva Morcha leader Eugenestar Kurkalang left the party and joined the United Democratic Party.
However, Hek said that in politics, the concept of “ aaya ram, gaya ram” exists and leaders leaving the party are not confined to BJP alone but other parties as well.
Citing examples, he said that recently NPP leaders joined the Congress in Arunachal Pradesh while several Congress leaders left the party in Karnataka.
When asked if the controversial citizenship bill is the reason behind the resignations of BJP leaders in Meghalaya, he replied in the negative.
He also said that he would oppose the bill from within the party as he along with the people of the state and the region are opposed to it.
