SHILLONG: UDP president Donkupar Roy on Wednesday reiterated his stand on strengthening regional parties and said national parties cannot be trusted.
Speaking to reporters on Wednesday, he said regional parties work for protection of indigenous people.
Commenting on the demand to convene an Assembly session on the Citizenship (Amendment) Bill, the UDP leader said the issue of CAB is not an issue of state politics but it is about Parliament.
“We expect our MPs to oppose the Bill and walking out of the House is meaningless,” he said.
It may be mentioned that Congress legislators walked out in protest during the debate on the CAB. The Lok Sabha has passed the Bill.
“You have to sit there and voice your opposition that people of Meghalaya do not accept the amendment Bill,” Roy said.
According to him, the Congress and BJP thinks about its own vote-bank politics while the regional parties think of the interest of the indigenous community.
There has been a call by social organisations to hold an Assembly session to send the message of opposition of the indigenous people to the Centre.
The northeastern states have raised apprehensions over the bill as the arrival of foreigners from Bangladesh, Afghanistan and Pakistan will overwhelm the minority indigenous communities in the North Eastern states.
