Guv suggests hydel project on Simsang

TURA: The Simsang river in Garo Hills has the potential for a hydro-power project and the state should look into the possibility, Governor Tathagata Roy has said.
Roy, who was on his maiden visit to East Garo Hills on Tuesday, suggested that the state should initiate steps for more power generation with the help of agencies like NEEPCO. He also assured to pass on the information to the government.
Interacting with government officials and members of Senior Citizens’ Welfare Forum, Roy said the future of Meghalaya lies in tourism and potentials need to be tapped accordingly.
Roy reviewed various government schemes and interacted with the senior citizens at Williamnagar Circuit House.
In the meeting, the Senior Citizens’ Welfare Forum, submitted a memorandum demanding construction of embankment along the Simsang river and also apprised the Governor of the non-functional TB Hospital and the Williamnagar Polytechnic, incomplete Rongap bridge at Rongreng Baija, etc.
Vice Chairman of the Meghalaya State Women’s Commission Gamchi Timre R Marak highlighted the issues relating to women safety and working women’s hostel and informed that women’s issues are being sidelined in the district. She also informed that she had not been allotted any vehicle.
Deputy Commissioner Swapnil Tembe highlighted the poor learning and health indicator, shortage of officers and staff in government departments and poor network coverage in the district.
While apprising the Governor of the prevailing situation in the district, Superintendent of Police, Ringrang T G Momin, informed that East Garo Hills is peaceful and crime rate is comparatively low.
