Hindu Mission raises alarm on imposters collecting money
SHILLONG: The secretary of Meghalaya Hindu Mission in Mawprem, BK Das, has said some people are collecting donation in different localities of Shillong in the name of Hindu Mission Orphanage. In a statement issued here, Das said the Mission does not have the practice of raising funds in an open register. Das requested the public to verify the necessary credentials before making any donation involving the name of the mission. He further informed that the matter has been taken up with appropriate authorities of the government so that it is dealt with in accordance with the law.
Workshop held at NEHU
TURA: The Department of Education of NEHU, Tura campus, organised a two-day workshop and community service titled ‘Environmental Issues and Problems: A Local Perspective for Sustainable Development’.The workshop was organised at Bolmagre village on March 25 and 26 with an aim to sensitise the local populace about environmental issues and problems. It also aimed at documenting traditional and ecological knowledge of the village elders. Around 78 farmers participated in the programme that included entrepreneurship skills and the participants, under the guidance of Prof. CP Suresh of NEHU, were provided training on preservation techniques and processing methodology for jam, jelly, squash and other beverages. A subsequent two-day training programme to skill the farmers of neighbouring villages on post-harvest management was also held on March 28 and 29.
Ban on fishing in Garo Hills
TURA: The district administration of West Garo Hills has issued an order under Section 144 CrPC prohibiting all kinds of fishing by use of dynamites, generators, bleaching powder and other poisonous chemicals or herbs in the entire rivers and streams with immediate effect to stop the ongoing destruction of the local and rare species of fish in the region. The order by deputy commissioner Ram Singh stated that individuals and groups are resorting to fishing by using various methods in the rivers and streams at a time when the fish breeding season is taking place. It added that such rampant use of methods for killing fish is endangering aquatic life leading to mass destruction of local and rare species of fish from the rivers of the district. Hundreds of anglers and fisherman can be seen every day along banks of streams and rivers and some have been noticed using chemicals and generators to catch fish in large numbers which is threatening the wipeout of the local species.
Awareness on human rights
WILLIAMNAGAR: The Meghalaya Human Rights Commission (MHRC), organised a one-day awareness programme on Human Rights at Loyola College in Williamnagar on Wednesday. While speaking on the occasion as chief guest, Dr. Justice Aftab H Saikia, the Chairperson of MHRC spoke at length about protection of human rights under the provisions of the Indian Constitution. He also informed the gathering that the MHRC was constituted in 2016 under Article 19 and 21 of the Constitution of India. The guest of honour, PJP Hanemann, former Director General of Police, Meghalaya and a member of the MHRC, while highlighting the duties and activities of the Commission, said a that 3-member MHRC had been constituted under Section 21 of the Protection of Human Rights Act, 1993. A large number of students, teachers, citizens, elders and the leaders of NGOs participated in the programme.
Section 144 imposed in WKH
NONGSTOIN: The District Magistrate, West Khasi Hills District has notified that section 144CrPC prohibiting plying of laden trucks beyond 9 metric tons through the Nongstoin-Maweit-Risiang-Wahlyngdoh and Mawmarin Road. Plying of loaded trucks through weak wooden bridges may collapse and will affect the community as a whole in the area, in terms of transportation of essential supplies and health services. The order will come into force with immediate effect.
Body recovered
SHILLONG: The Superintendent of Police, East Khasi Hills informed that on March 28 at 4:30 pm, a semi decomposed unknown male body, aged between 40-45 years was found lying in the bushes behind Gorkha Durga Mandir at Paltan Bazar, Shillong. He was wearing black sweater, green T-shirt and camo pants, height is 5.1 ft and the face is beyond recognition. The body was shifted to Shillong Civil Hospital.
