SHILLONG: An infant was raped by a minor boy in the city and the accused was handed over to the police by residents of the locality on Monday. Though the incident took place on April 8, the matter was not immediately reported to the police.
The accused, a relative of the one-and-a-half-year-old victim, is aged 17 and the incident happened when the mother was away for work. The child was alone inside the house, sources said.
The accused was arrested and booked under POCSO, sources added.
Chairperson of Meghalaya State Commission for Protection of Child Rights Meena Kharkongor has sought a report from the police regarding the matter.
The child will be taken care of by the Child Welfare Committee, she said.
According to sources, the infant was admitted to Ganesh Das Hospital only on April 11.
The local women’s group has intervened in the matter while the police are tightlipped over the incident.
A member of the women’s group of the locality confirmed the development.
On Monday, the accused was taken to Dorbar and later handed over to the police following the intervention of the members of Seng Kynthei and others.
