Storms, heavy rain wreak havoc in Assam

GUWAHATI: A high-intensity storm lashed most parts of Assam, including main city Guwahati, in the wee hours on Wednesday, leaving a trail of destruction by uprooting trees, damaging houses and Bihu function pandals.
Several people sustained injuries in the storm, though no loss of life had been reported yet, official sources said.
High winds preceded the heavy rains in several parts of northern, western and southern Assam, while heavy downpour was reported from almost all parts of the state.
In Guwahati, several Bihu celebration pandals were completely damaged by the storm. The artistes had to rush down from the stage and audience ran for cover.  Several people were injured during the storm.
The storm blew away roofs of numerous houses and damaged several more in various parts.  Trees were uprooted at different parts, blocking roads for several hours in the morning.
Electricity connection was disrupted at several parts of the state, including Guwahati for many hours on Wednesday, which was yet to be restored in many parts as the storm caused severe damages to power distribution networks, and was yet to be restored till Wednesday afternoon.
Some of the worse affected areas include Tihu, Kaliabor, Golaghat, Nagaon, north Guwahati, etc.
