SHILLONG: Jaiaw MDC Paul Lyngdoh has expressed concern over the education system in the state while citing the low success rate in the Union Public Service Commission (UPSC) examinations.
The last person from the state to have cleared the examination was Isawanda Laloo, who is now deputy commissioner of South West Khasi Hills district, in 2013.
Addressing a programme to felicitate 20 meritorious students here on Saturday, he said, “there are no rank holders in the UPSC from the state.”
Recalling that he has met highly-placed officials from Bangladesh, who have appreciated their Shillong education, he pointed out that there must be a drawback in the education system in the state which is known as the education hub.
Lyngdoh cited the example of Manipur, a state which has produced a number of renowned sportspersons in the face of insurgency problems, drug menace and prevalence of HIV.
Stating that family plays a positive role in shaping the future of their wards, he urged parents to lead their wards by setting an example especially at a time when people’s attention span is getting shorter.
“The attention span is getting short. Instead of writing ‘you’, we often write ‘u’,” he said.
Twenty students from Mawprem who passed their SSLC, HSSLC, CBSE and ICSE were felicitated with the (Late) Anthony Blah Award for Excellence, 2019.
