SHILLONG: The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) is forming the government at the Centre again but the saffron party has failed to win even one seat in Meghalaya after fielding candidates in both Shillong and Tura seats.
However, the state BJP is more than happy that urban voters have once again reposed their faith on the party.
Addressing a press conference shortly after counting of votes on Thursday, BJP candidate Sanbor Shullai said that he was surprised over the fact that he secured 76,683 votes.
However, documents showed that in the last 2014 Lok Sabha polls, Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) got 95,979 votes when the state president, Shibun Lyngdoh, had contested the polls.
“Urban voters are wise enough,” Shullai said while informing that in his South Shillong Assembly constituency, he got 12,514 votes which was a considerable improvement over the 11,204 votes he had secured in the last Assembly elections in 2018.
Shullai said that the BJP polled more votes in West Shillong constituency even as he informed that in the assembly constituencies in Shillong, BJP secured 43,880 votes whereas Congress got 39,709 votes only.
With this performance, Shullai said that the state unit has decided to convey to the party high command that the party has a good future in Meghalaya provided they are given enough time to spread their wings in remote areas of the state to enlighten people about the good work done by the BJP.
The BJP candidate said that the party entered into the fray at the last moment and he could attend only six meetings in his political campaign.
Earlier, party president Shibun Lyngdoh said that though BJP could not win the Shillong seat he is hopeful that the people will vote for the saffron party in Shillong in future elections after seeing the development in the rest of the country.
