SHILLONG: The Public Accounts Committee (PAC) sub-committee of the Meghalaya Legislative Assembly found several infrastructural deficiencies at the Ganesh Das Hospital following an inspection of some sections of the hospital.

The PAC members also held a meeting with officials of Ganesh Das hospital. Speaking to reporters, HM Shangpliang said the hospital lacks in many aspects such as manpower, ICU to treat children.

Stating that there are 25 sanction posts of doctors yet only 20 were filled, he said there were 400 beds in the hospital while only two doctors were present for night duty. As for nurses, the sanction number is 180, but the hospital had 120 nurses.

The PAC sub-committee of the Meghalaya Legislative Assembly expressed concern that the handover of the additional building to the hospital authorities has not been done. Shangpliang urged the engineer to handover the building to the hospital within six months.

He pointed to another problem is that the hospital has no ICU for children especially to treat those who are born premature. In this connection, he said the doctor should place a proposal before the government citing the shortages.

In view of the hospital’s condition, he urged the government to look into the shortages in the hospital very seriously and said that the PAC would also give a report to the state government highlighting the condition of the hospital.

Meanwhile, another member of the committee, Renikton Lyngdoh Tongkhar said the hospital should propose to the government to admit hospital attendants on contractual basis to assist the rural folks coming to the hospital.
