SWKHD DC seeks public participation

Mawkyrwat: The ‘One Citizen One Tree’ plantation campaign was held in different parts of Mawkyrwat Block and Ranikor Civil Sub-Division in South West Khasi Hills District on Wednesday.
Twenty-five villages and 150 schools in the district were selected to participate in the campaign in which about 1,000 saplings were planted in each village and selected schools. Villagers as well as students actively participated in the programme.
Speaking at a programme at Domjyrti village, 8 kms away from Mawkyrwat, the Deputy Commissioner (DC) Isawanda Laloo said that due to human activities, environment has been destroyed and, hence, preservation and conservation of the environment is the need of the hour.
The DC also stressed on the need of public participation, a sense of ownership, and a wise utilisation of resources by understanding the regeneration capacity so that we benefit from nature without harming the environment.
“What we do today will have an impact on tomorrow”, Laloo said while calling for introspection into the past and present in bringing about a change through different activities and to make concerted efforts to become agents of sustainable development.
She also called for support and a greater public participation in order to make the environment pollution-free, clean and green, so as to achieve the desired target.
