SHILLONG: The High Level Committee (HLC) set up by the Meghalaya government to find a solution to the relocation of settlers of Harijan Colony, will sit next week to discuss on the current status of the issue and the plan ahead.
Member of the High Level Committee and Urban Affairs Minister, Hamlet Dohling on Monday said the government is tackling the issue in a careful way since it is a sensitive issue.
Refusing to divulge details of the likely area of discussion in the upcoming meeting, Dohling said, “We cannot spell out all the details as the HLC is still on the job and will submit its findings to the state government”.
It is over a year now since the HLC was constituted after trouble broke out at Harijan Colony and the demand for its relocation grew louder. The solution is still out of sight despite the HLC holding numerous meetings.
The Shillong Municipal Board had issued notices with effect from June 3 to the settlers of the Colony to provide all their details before the Board in one month’s time. The deadline will expire on July 3.
Asked about reports suggesting that the HLC has already made up its mind for relocating the settlers, Dohling said “It is too early to say since the committee is still working on the matter
“At the end of the day, HLC will submit the report to the government and then and there, a clear picture will emerge on the role played by the HLC,” Dohling said.
