SHILLONG: Meghalaya Joint Council of Trade Unions and Associations (MJCTU & A), the apex body of all trade unions and associations of Meghalaya, has extended support and solidarity with the agitation launched by the faculty of St Edmund’s College, Shillong under the aegis of Meghalaya College Teachers’ Association, St Edmund’s College (MCTA SEC) unit, a release issued here informed.
The MJCTU&A has requested the management of the college to see just reasons and settle the issue amicably without any further delay and also pledge equality and right of citizens in the larger interest of education in the state.
The organisation has also urged the appropriate authority in the state government to intervene and make its presence felt to regulate the autocratic private institutions of the state for sustaining healthy academic scenario.
It may be mentioned that the teachers have gone on an indefinite strike from Monday demanding reinstatement of Jeffreyson Wahlang, a professor on probation, who had been served with a termination letter recently, apparently without citing any valid reason.
The MCTA SEC has also demanded uniform service rules for all categories of teachers of the College, provision of equal status for all teachers and other usual service benefits as enjoyed by employees elsewhere.
