SHILLONG: The United Democratic Party (UDP), which is a part of the MDA government, is now preparing for the GHADC elections scheduled next year.
The party is optimistic it would be able to improve its tally and presence in Garo Hills.
Senior leader Jemino Mawthoh said that the party was supposed to have a meeting in Garo Hills this month to chalk out the strategy for the polls, but it had to be cancelled due to unavoidable reasons.
Mawthoh informed that the meeting would be held as soon as the party president returns to the state
The senior party leader is also confident that the party would able to do better this time as it is now in power and some MLAs from Garo Hills have also joined the party.
Stating there is a sizeable number of voters of UDP even in Garo Hills, he added that the party will contest the elections aggressively banking on its former and incumbent MLAs and party workers. Asked if the UDP’s image as a Khasi Hills party would affect its prospects in Garo Hills, he said that such rumours are being spread by the opposition parties. UDP is a state party and it works for the entire state and not only Khasi Hills region, he said.
