Moderate to heavy rainfall expected in State

 SHILLONG: With the thunder squalls in West Khasi Hills (WKH) district recently which killed people, destroyed crops and other assets besides driving people homeless, the Regional Meteorological Centre (RMC), Guwahati has warned moderate to very heavy rainfall in the state in the next 24 hours and other states in the region.

Informing further, the source said that the thunderstorm is also expected to bring with it similar strong winds and hailstorm as seen in case of WKH and some parts of Assam, recently. The WKH thunder squall is learnt to have a wind speed of around 90kmph. The RMC weatherman said that as per forecast they are expecting heavy rainfall in these states due to the low pressure trough from Eastern Uttar Pradesh to northeastern states across Bihar, Gangetic West Bengal, Bangladesh and Meghalaya still persists in the region.

It may be mentioned that the recent storm in WKH has injured several people and rendered around 45 families homeless, according to official sources.

The high velocity storm ravaged the district as it lasted for an hour disrupting power and telephone communication besides uprooting trees and crops.

The District Magistrate has even released an immediate relief of Rs1lakh to the affected families.
