SHILLONG: The state government will follow up the discussion related to pollution of rivers during the Indo-Bangla border meeting on Tuesday.
Bangladesh had expressed concern over coal mining affecting their rivers on the other side of the fence and the matter was discussed during Tuesday’s meeting of officials of border districts of Meghalaya and Bangladesh.
East Khasi Hills Deputy Commissioner, Matsiewdor War Nongbri said the discussions and decisions will be taken up with the government based on the minutes of the meeting.
She said there are policy decisions which involve a district, country and even the other side, the decisions and discussions will be done by the government itself.
Bangladesh said Myntdu, known as Sari river in Bangladesh, is causing pollution due to coal mining thereby affecting its residents.
Ahmad Kabir, the district magistrate of Jamalpur, said the issue was raised by the deputy commissioners from Bangladesh during the meeting in Shillong.
According to Kabir, since both India and Bangladesh have common rivers, and they can take steps to use river water after preventing water pollution.
Karbir said the metallic components during coal mining affect the water quality of Sari river.
