AGARTALA: Tripura government has once again expressed its strong reservation over the no-detention policy up to class VIII standard under the Right to Education Act.
The government conveyed its stand on the sensitive issue to special advisor of National Commission for Protection for Child Rights (NCPCR) RL Mishra at a meeting with state government officials at Civil Secretariat on Friday.
Mishra is in three-day visit to the state to review the implementation of right to education for child, right to healthcare and social safety under the Right to Education Act.
In the meeting, Principal Secretary Banamali Sinha made it clear that the state government is still against no-detention policy up to Class VIII standard under the RTE Act though it was implemented in the state from current academic session.
“The no-detention policy may come on the way of providing quality education and there is a need to rethink over the sensitive issue’, he told the Special Secretary of NCPCR.
Besides, the state government also took up the issue of shortage of trained teachers in the state. Sinha said that the state has only one B. Ed College while four teachers’ training institute in four districts out of total eight districts.
It would not be possible to train up large number of teachers within two years.
To increase the training facilities, the state government had already urged the Centre to set up four more teachers’ training institutes.
Later talking to reporters, Sinha said the Special Secretary assured of taking up the issues at the appropriate level for taking remedial measures.
