NONGSTOIN: Following the publication of final National Register of Citizens (NRC) in Assam, where 19 lakh people have been excluded, the Khasi Students’ Union (KSU) Nongstoin Circle on Monday apprehended 30 non-tribals without ‘‘NRC documents’’.
The KSU led by Wanbhakupar Lyngdoh Nonglait along with 30 members carried out an inspection at Industrial Estate in Mawiaban, West Khasi Hills.
During the checking, the union found out that 23 non-tribals who claimed to be working in the mills had no ‘‘NRC documents’’.
When asked, they said their names were on the list but they did not carry the documents.
All the managers of the mills in the industrial estate have assured that they will send them back until they provide ‘‘NRC documents’’.
The KSU also found out that four non-tribals working in the industrial estate have no valid documents including NRC, EPIC or even Labour license from KHADC or labour department. Nonglait said that after publication of the final NRC, the union is concerned over the influx as no check points were set up in the interstate border.
He said that the union has decided that inspection will be carried out in all the factories and other project sites. “All the 26 non-tribals were sent back to their native places to get the ‘NRC documents’,” the leader said.
He urged the district administration to take the issue seriously and to be alert especially in Langpih and in the other inter-state border areas.
After the inspection at Industrial Estate, the KSU went to Don Bosco Technical School at Pyndenglawar where they detained four more non-tribals.
