Moopun festival concludes on high note

JOWAI: Moopun festival — a festival to observe the World Tourism Day — concluded on a high note, on Saturday.
The festival was organised by the Mutong Tourism Promotion and Environment Protection Society, Mutong Village, East Jaintia Hills, in collaboration with the District Administration under the leadership of the Deputy Commissioner FM Dopth, NSS Unit of the Jaintia Eastern College, East Jaintia Tourism Society and supported by Basin Development, Swatch Bharat Mission and All Jaintia Cement Manufacturer Association.
The DC inaugurated the festival on Friday and the Minister in-charge of Revenue, Disaster and Social Welfare, Kyrmen Shylla graced the occasion on the closing ceremony.
Shylla assured to provide financial assistance of Rs 2 lakhs for construction of public latrine at Moopun Waterfall for the benefit of the tourists.
He also lauded the Mutong Tourism Promotion Society for organising a one-of-a-kind festival in East Jaintia Hills for the protection of environment and promotion of tourism.
Shylla also appreciated the DC who had taken initiatives in helping the village authority to develop the tourist spots.
Earlier, FM Dopth informed that by October, these places will be developed and a sanctioned through the District Mineral Fund has been put in place.
In course of completion of the festival, various activities were conducted which included trek-cum-cleaning drive in which single-use plastics were collected from Myntdu River-Sahkshaw to Kai-Langdon and to Moopun Falls, besides competitions like archery, tug-of war, swimming were also organised.
The president of the society, Helping Phawa, who is also the headman of the village, informed that the society will also observe the Golden Jubilee of World Tourism Day in 2020.
