Nongpoh: A one-day awareness programme on ‘Swachhata Hi Seva 2019’ organised by the Department of Textiles in association with the Central Silk Board Ministry of Textiles was held Friday at the office premises of District Sericulture Office, Nongpoh.
The motive of the programme, which was attended by Farmers of Silk farming from 65 villages of the district, is to mobilise citizens about banning of single-use plastic in the district.
The Deputy Commissioner (DC) of the district, Mary Kurbah, in her speech to the gathering, highlighted the importance of cleanliness and the need to stop the usage of single-use plastic.
She also spoke on the harmful effects of single-use plastic and emphasised farmers on the use of cloth bags instead of plastic bags and also on keeping the surroundings clean.
She also suggested all the residents of the district to have one compost pit for kitchen solid wastes and a soak pit for disposes of unwanted water in every household.
This, she said, will enable people to maintain cleanliness at home as well as in the community as a whole. She also appealed residents to put into practices all the guidelines provided in the trainings by the officials.
Lalthangzo, on the other hand, called Meghalaya “the most proactive state among the Northeastern states,” adding that the citizens of the state are lucky to have a government who is always aware for their betterment.
