SHILLONG: UDP chief advisor Bindo Lanong has pushed the responsibility to the people for having installed a multi-party coalition instead of a single party government.
UDP is part of the Meghalaya Democratic Alliance (MDA) which has a coalition of NPP, BJP, UDP, HSPDP, PDF, NCP, KHNAM and one Independent.
Despite the appeal made by the UDP, the MDA allies – BJP and PDF fielded candidates for the Shella bypoll.
“The question is why the public came out with such a mandate. Why don’t the voters think differently? This is a multiple coalition and it is the people who brought out such a result”, he said.
ECI silent on money distribution
On the other hand, Lanong asserted that the Election Commission of India is not maintaining a tough stand when it comes to distribution of gifts and cash during the elections.
“Why did not the ECI direct the state election commission to be vigilant? The ECI is silent on distribution of money”, he said.
Speaking about the election prospect of UDP in Shella, he expressed optimism that late Donkupar Roy’s son, Balajiedkupar Synrem will cross his late father’s victory margin. Late Roy never crossed a margin of 1000 votes in the elections.
