SHILLONG: Despite Nongkrem legislator Ardent Basaiawmoit’s indifference to the notice issued by the party, the UDP is making a last-ditch effort by assigning its East Khasi Hills district president RA Lyngdoh to persuade the legislator to contest the upcoming Assembly elections on a party ticket.

Lyngdoh is expected to submit a report before the party’s State Election Committee (SEC) after meeting the Nongkrem legislator.

“I shall meet Basaiawmoit in a day or two and do my best to convince him to contest from the party,” Lyngdoh said here on Sunday.

Meanwhile, UDP president Dr Donkupar Roy said that they are yet to discuss the matter at the party level.

“We would discuss the issue in the upcoming meeting of the SEC before taking a final decision,” Dr Roy said.

The UDP president however stated that he would like to see Basaiawmoit contest from the party in the upcoming election.

It may be mentioned that on May 17 last, party general secretary BG Momin had issued a notice giving Basaiawmoit a month’s time to clarify his stand on whether he would contest next year’s Assembly election on a UDP ticket.

Reacting to it, Basaiawmoit maintained that he would reply to the notice served ‘as per his own convenience’.
