SHILLONG: Garo Hills-based A’chik Youth Welfare Organization (AYWO) has decided to temporarily suspend its agitation after the State Government assured that it would take steps to ensure that there is no power disruption in Garo Hills.
The assurance came from Power Minister AT Mondal after a delegation of the AYWO on Friday met him to deliberate on the matter.
The AYWO had earlier organised sit-in demonstrations and a hunger strike in protest against the poor power supply in Garo Hills.
Speaking to media persons after the meeting, AYWO president E Ch Momin said, “We have temporarily suspended our agitations but if the Government does not fulfill its promise then we will be compelled to call for more intense agitations.”
According to Momin, the Power Minister has assured the delegation that he would take steps to ensure that sufficient power is supplied to Garo Hills region.
The organisation was planning to hold a mass rally and a signature campaign against the frequent power cuts in the region.
KSU team meets Power Minister
The KSU South West Khasi Hills unit on Thursday met Power Minister AT Mondal and apprised him on the un-satisfactory functioning of the Meghalaya Energy Corporation Limited (MeECL) in South West Khasi Hills covering three C&RD Blocks – Mawsynram, Mawkyrwat and Ranikor.
During the meeting, the Union pointed out that the areas have been experiencing regular power failure.
“Most of the remote villages do not get electricity supply for months”, the Union stated, while adding that the MeECL should ensure that electricity bills are delivered to the consumers every month.
The KSU also urged the Power minister to set up a sub-divisional office of the MeECL at Ranikor.
