Young innovators showcase their talent

 SHILLONG: The two-day district-level Science exhibition, organised by the District School Education Officer, East Khasi Hills district, Shillong, held at St. Mary’s Higher Secondary School, Laitumkhrah, concluded on Friday.

The theme for the Science exhibition was ‘Science, Society and Environment’, under which, there were six sub-themes – Agriculture and Food Security, Energy, Resources and their Conservation, Health, Mathematics and Everyday Life and Disaster Management.

The exhibition saw the participation of 17 schools, both from Shillong and other rural areas.

Students of the host school presented three models based on three sub-themes – Health, Disaster Management and Mathematics.

Various innovative scientific models were on display.

“This is my first Science exhibition and the experience has been really great and knowledgeable. Such events give us the opportunity to take up scientific ideas and apply them,” said Shubangi Barua, a student of St. Mary’s Higher Secondary School.

The Exhibition is a part of the National framework of NCERT to encourage students to have natural learning process and, hence, they are automatically motivated. The teachers of the respective schools played an instrumental role in helping the students to bring out innovative ideas and displaying them through their models.

“Discoveries in Science and Technology must not stop, it should flow continuously like a river,” said a teacher. The criteria behind judging the Exhibition was based on the students’ own innovations, their originality, the scientific craftsmanship, the technical skill, the demonstration and the overall presentation.

“Winning does not matter, what matters is the understanding of Science and its relevance with the society and the environment. With commitment, seriousness and hardwork, the students will be able to shine,” said Dr HG Lyngdoh, one of the judges at the Science Exhibition. T Pale, Deputy Director of Higher & Technical Education, Meghalaya was the chief guest for the concluding function. The event was chaired by T Lyngdoh, District School Education Officer, East Khasi Hills district, Shillong.

Prizes were awarded to the students who presented the best models under the different sub-themes.

The winners not only got an invitation for the State-Level Science Exhibition but were also awarded cash prizes of Rs 800.
