SHILLONG: The East Khasi Hills police have put up a check post near Pynursla Police Station to check the smuggling of cattle to Bangladesh.
“The decision was taken after a recent meeting among Police, Customs and BSF officials,” East Khasi Hills Superintendent of Police AR Mawthoh said here on Tuesday.
During the joint meeting, Mawthoh said there was an unanimity on the need to set up a check post considering the amount of cattle are being to smuggled to Bangladesh through Pynursla.
When asked who would be leading the raid on the vehicles at the check post, he said that the officer-in-charge of Pynursla police station would be heading the team while adding that the personnel of both the Customs and BSF would be part and parcel of this whole process. While replying to a query, he, however, said he had issued clear guidelines that every possible step should be taken to ensure that no undue harassment is being meted out on the common people while conducting raid. It may be reminded that over 10,000 cattle estimated at over Rs 13 crore are seized only by the BSF every year along the border in Assam and Meghalaya.
