JOWAI: Thousands of dead fish were seen floating again in the infamous Lukha River situated in East Jaintia Hills district. The fish began dying as soon as the colour of the river changed to bright sky blue due to contamination.
A week ago, residents of the area were happy to see the colour of the river go back to normal with variety of fish appearing as the river turned clear and transparent.
However, on Thursday, the river colour changed again resulting in the killing of aquatic life in it.
Locals in the area had early this month claimed that due to lockdown, cement plants had stopped operation making the river clear again.
The KSU Sunapyrdi (Sonapur) Unit has now threatened to lodge a complaint to the NGT against the contamination of the river.
“It is sad to see the fish floating dead in the river while people in the area are collecting the fish for their meal without any concern about their health”, the president of KSU, Narpuh circle said.
“We are filing a complaint with NGT and we strongly hope that the tribunal will intervene in the matter”, KSU leader, K Suchiang said.
It may be mentioned here that Lukha river changed its colour for the first time in November 2007 and since then, it has become an annual phenomenon during the month between November and February.
