NONGSTOIN/SHILLONG: Pynskhemlang Nongshlong, who is leading the fast-unto-death at Langpih, has suspended his agitation for two months.
Nongshlong made this announcement from the Nonstoin Civil Hospital in the presence of the Deputy Commissioner of West Khasi Hills District S Kharlyngdoh on Tuesday.
The 28-year-old youth from Rambrai village in West Khasi Hills district, bordering Assam’s Kamrup district went on indefinite fast from June 30 along with a few others demanding solution to the vexed border dispute between Meghalaya and Assam.
Nongshlong while making the announcement placed some conditions for the withdrawal of fast-unto-death. He said two months time has been given to the government to fulfill the demands he had placed earlier, like the reconstruction of the Dorbar Hall of the Hima Raid Mynsaw at Langpih, the completion of the market shed, the upgradation of the Police Outpost etc.
He thanked all the NGOs for their support. He also thanked the 16 participants who accompanied him against all odds.
Welcoming Nongshlong’s decision, the Deputy Commissioner assured him that the government would take appropriate steps pertaining to his demands.
Meanwhile, the state government has deferred the all-party meeting on border dispute by a day.
Announcing this on Tuesday, Chief Minister Dr Mukul Sangma said the meeting will now be held on July 25 and a notification in this regard would be issued on Wednesday.
