SHILLONG: The State Disaster Management Authority (SDMA), Meghalaya, has issued various measures to prepare for the forthcoming monsoon season in the state, especially amid the COVID-19 pandemic. “Planning for monsoon season and other potential disasters can be stressful, and especially when the 2020 monsoon season comes during the COVID-19 pandemic,” the SDMA said in a statement on Thursday.
The SDMA has urged one and all to consume enough food, water, and other supplies that would last for at least 72 hours. “If you need to evacuate, prepare a ‘go kit’ with personal items you cannot do without during an emergency. Include items that can help protect you and others from COVID-19, such as hand sanitser, or bar or liquid soap if not available, and two-cloth face coverings for each person,” it added.
t has also exhorted people to pay attention to local guidance about updated plans for evacuations and shelters. “If you evacuate to a community shelter, follow the latest guidelines from the Ministry of Health & Family Welfare, Government of India,” it said.
It has also urged everyone to follow the social distancing among other protocols while checking on neighbours and friends. “If you are injured or ill, contact the district authorities who will assist you to locate a medical provider for treatment recommendations,” the SDMA said. In the thick of monsoon and the pandemic, which can cause anxiety among most, the SDMA has urged everyone to contact the district authorities “who will assist you in locating a trained professional to help you cope with a stressful time”.
