Shillong: Over hundred students from the Tlong Umiam Secondary School, Weilyngkut in West Khasi Hills participated in the “Save fish, save River” campaign organised by the KSU Sohiong Circle and the KSU Weilyngkut Area Unit at the school premises on Friday.

Secretary of the KSU Environment Protection Cell Wallambok Kharsati said that it has been eight years since the inception of this campaign and expressed gratitude to the villages and people who had come forward and extended their support to this environmental initiative.

The Officer on Special Duty, Meghalaya Institute of Governance AB Swer, who was also the resource person, said that there is a need for man and the environment to walk hand in hand and ‘one should preserve and protect the environment as they would do to their own home.’

Meanwhile, principal of this school G Milton Lyngdoh informed that the fund for constructing the school came from leasing the Tlong Umiam River years ago and urged the students to carry the message of a balanced ecosystem to the rural populace who still need to know a lot about a clean environment and the consequences of its destruction.

“Whatever we are, we owe to the environment and hence we should learn to respect it,” he said.

Later, the members of the KSU along with the students released 5000 fish species at Tlong Umiam River.
