TURA: Continuing its reign of terror, a group of suspected GNLA militants killed a ginger merchant and abducted another from the Rari weekly market, which falls under the newly created North Garo Hills district on Tuesday morning.

According to sources, the merchant, a resident of Assam, was shot dead for resisting abduction. The incident brought the bustling market to a standstill and fear-stricken people fled the area immediately.

Earlier, at around 7:00 am, suspected militants came to the busy weekly market to kidnap the two ginger merchants who had come from Krishnai in Assam. The market, which usually starts early, was swarming with people when the unidentified assailants abducted the two merchants and headed for the nearby forest. However, on reaching the Rari Upper Primary School en route to the forest, one of the merchants attempted to resist the abductors and in the melee the abductors shot one of them. The militants then fled from the area, taking the other merchant with them.
It may be mentioned that in July, one Dannybirth G Momin, a school teacher was also killed by GNLA militants at Resubelpara in North Garo Hills. Reports stated that, the school teacher was dragged out of his home and shot dead nearby.
