NONGSTOIN: The Khasi Students’ Union (KSU), Mawshynrut Circle on Thursday decided to step down from the Joint Action Committee (JAC), which was created to collectively oppose the setting up of the coke plant in Shallang, West Khasi Hills.
The KSU was one of the constituents of the JAC of Mawshynrut along with FKJGP, HNYF, HANM, WYF, WKSU, UHM, HYC and Synjuk ki Rangbah Shnong Umdang Area.
Addressing the media, KSU Mawshynrut Circle president Armstrong Sohshang along with other members said that the main reason for quitting is the lack of trust and confidence within the JAC.
Sohshang said that the leaders of HANM, HYC and WYF have allegedly agreed not to object to the setting up of the coke plant where the documents relating to NOC were sent to the District Forest Officer, Nongstoin, but which were later found leaked on social media. The KSU has sent a letter to the General Secretary of JAC stating that it does not want to be part of the committee anymore.
Sohshang also said that the KSU will continue to fight against the setting up of the coke plant with or without the support of the JAC.
