SHILLONG: With an aim to bolster transport infrastructure in the state, Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma, on Tuesday, convened a meeting with the Transport department to discuss and review key projects.
The chief minister along with Minister in-charge of Transport, S Dhar, and other department officials deliberated on the setting up of the Institute of Driving Training and Research (IDTR), for which the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways (MoRTH) has a scheme for setting up a model IDTR to improve road safety.
Officials informed the chief minister that the department has land at Wahiajer in West Jaintia Hills and Jengjal in West Garo Hills, which was donated by the community.
The Detailed Project Report (DPR) is being prepared for both the locations to be submitted to the MoRTH for funding.
The department is in the process of identifying suitable land for the setting up of Inspection & Certification Centre (I&CC) in the state.
I&CCs are required to be set up for the issue of fitness certificates for all categories of vehicles and for undergoing mandatory idle emission tests.
A typical centre consisting of four lanes requires land of approximately three acres.
The central government provides 100 per cent capital investment towards construction of buildings, establishment of utilities, and the test equipment/lane for the centre.
