Rainfall likely for next few days in state

SHILLONG: After incessant rainfall recently, which had triggered floods in many parts of the state, Meghalaya is likely to be drenched by the rain anew for the next 4-5 days.
Metrological Department, Shillong, in a tweet, said the monsoon trough is very likely to shift gradually northwards along the foothills of Himalayas during next 24 hours besides high convergence of south westerlies/southerlies winds from Bay of Bengal at lower tropospheric levels is very likely over North East from Thursday onwards. “Under its influence, widespread rainfall with isolated heavy to very heavy falls is very likely over Meghalaya from today. Isolated extremely heavy falls are also very likely over Meghalaya during July 9 to 11,” another tweet said.
When contacted, an official of the Metrological department, Shillong, said that the rainfall is going to increase in Meghalaya for the next 4-5 days, albeit the monsoon in the state has been good.
“So far, the state has recorded 1221.0 mm rainfall which is 14 per cent more than normal rainfall of 1072.7 mm,” the official said.
It was also informed that during this season, Mawsynram has received highest rainfall of 659.6 mm on June 27. Besides, Shillong has received this season’s highest rainfall of 167.6 mm on June 26.
