NONGSTOIN: After the Khasi Students’ Union (KSU), West Khasi Hills District Unit, called for no involvement of students in any event in the Independence Day celebrations in the district this year, the West Khasi Hills Deputy Commissioner has said that he will not force the students to take part, adding that the march-past will be done as per the advisories of the Health department.
However, the KSU has expressed displeasure over the DC’s decision.
The demand was made in view of the rise in COVID-19 cases.
Speaking with the pressmen here on Tuesday, the Union also demanded from the DC to put a temporary halt to the Food Corporation of India (FCI) trucks entering the district and to also conduct random tests for truckers and labourers working at the FCI at Pyndengrei as one of the handymen of FCI trucks had recently tested positive. To this, the DC has assured that random testing will be conducted at FCI on Wednesday while transportation of rice into the FCI will be done as per the SOPs.
The KSU also said the union has demanded from the DC to stop transferring officers within the district and also to postpone the promotion training of police personnel at Sohpian for the time being.
To this, the DC said that a random test was conducted on Tuesday for all the 4th MLP personnel, adding that restrictions have been imposed so that no one will leave the campus.
