SHILLONG: Though the State Congress is gearing up for early election, the same may not take place with several mandatory pre-election exercises yet to be completed.

According to sources, the Congress is trying to go for an early election to capitalise on the perceived ‘feel-good-factor’ prevailing in the state following the creation of the four new districts and launching of various people-friendly schemes.

However, an official source ruled out the possibility of an early election saying there are several procedures which are to be completed.

As an instance, he pointed out to the final summary revision of electoral rolls, which is likely to take place only in January.

“The last summary revision will allow genuine citizens who have completed 18 years by January, 2013 to enrol themselves as voters” the source said.

Reacting to reports in a section of the media that Chief Minister Dr Mukul Sangma is pressing for early election, the source said the Election Commission is mandated to take the final call.

Earlier, the MPCC president DD Lapang said his party is ready for an early election.

However, unlike other parties the Congress is yet to announce its candidates. The Congress had only last week started issuing the application forms for ticket aspirants.

Congress sources meanwhile said that the party would be in ‘real trouble’ if the elections are held in December.
