SHILLONG: Stepping up its ante against NEHU Vice-chancellor, S.K.Srivastava, the Joint Action Committee (NEHUTA, NEHUNTSA and NEHUSU), staged a silent protest in the campus on Tuesday alleging “all round failure, non-performance and (his) absence” and demanded not to extend his term of office any further.
In an unprecedented development, Chairman of the JAC, XP Mao said that in the absence of Srivastava they would request the senior-most professor to be the acting VC until a new VC was appointed. “Our rules are very clear as soon as the terms of the VC gets over the senior most professor takes over therefore we will request the senior-most professor to be the acting VC until a new VC is appointed”, he said.
The JAC is peeved at the VC for not releasing the list of seniority which should be released every year but the VC has never done so and the teaching faculty is also oblivious to the list.
Asked about the next plan of action if the VC remained adamant, Mao said the JAC would resort to democratic protests if VC does not step down on September 23.
On the other hand, Mao said that the other reason is the poor and miserable performance of the VC which has brought down the University to the lowest level ever in NEHU history by the various ranking framework networks in the country.
He said that most former VCs had constructed buildings and other infrastructure of the university, Srivastava failed to construct a single building and resorted to non recruitment of teachers.
Asked about the removal of heads of department of Political Science and English, he said the head department of Political Science and head of English were illegally removed and said that Srivastava has acted against the NEHU statutory provisions.
“The head of the department of Political Science started the online classes, he was going with it sincerely but committed a mistake which was not as per particular format, the VC insisted and under that pretext both of them were removed but there was no such room for removal,” he said.
Mao said the meeting of the Board of Research Studies where various research activities are coordinated, debated, discussed and also suggested good measures for improvement has not been called during his tenure.
