SHILLONG: Ten NGOs of the State will take out a procession from the KSU office in Jaiaw towards the Additional Secretariat Parking Lot on Monday in an attempt to pressurize the State Government to implement the Inner Line Permit (ILP) in Meghalaya.

The NGOs which include KSU, FKJGP, HNYF, RBYF, JYF, JSU, CSWO, KWADA and others would also hold a one-day sit-in demonstration at the parking lot from 11 am to 4 pm.

“This is the first step taken by the NGOs to convey the message to the Government to implement the ILP to keep a check on influx and also to prevent entry of illegal migrants into the State,” FKJGP working president Joe Marwein said on Sunday.

When asked about the Government’s intention to put in place a mechanism more effective then the ILP, Marwein said, “Chief Minister Dr Mukul Sangma has been talking about this ‘strong mechanism’ since October last. He had earlier also informed that the government would implement a ‘strong mechanism’ more effective than the Bengal Eastern Frontier Regulation Act, 1873 to prevent illegal immigrants from entering the State.”

The Chief Minister had recently stated that the government is in the process of setting up the Directorate of Infiltration within the Police department and accordingly the government had sanctioned appointment of 39 Labour officers in all the 39 blocks of the State.
