SHILLONG: World-renowned numismatist, Nicholas Rhodes, who also penned a few books on the north-eastern region of India, passed away in his hometown Kent in London on Wednesday.

He has written and lectured widely, both in India and the West, on the coinage of the Himalayas and North East India.

Born in 1947 in London, Rhodes has been interested in numismatics all his life, both as a student and a collector. He was the former president of North East India History Association and presided over the silver jubilee celebration of the Association held in NEHU in 2004.

NEHUs History department’s former lecturer Prof JB Bhattacharjee said the sudden demise of Rhodes is a great loss for the historical research in the North-East.

Bhattacharjee said Rhodes has written a lot of books on the region along with Prof SK Bhose.
