JOWAI, Nov 26: The BJP members staged a walk-out in the Jaintia Hills Autonomous District Council (JHADC) over opposition to a resolution passed by the Council, which empowers the dollois to collect taxes, set up tolls and check gates in various parts of the districts.
One of the BJP leaders, Lakhon Biam, tore the resolution paper in the House as a sign of protest.
“The resolution reminds me of the British Raj when various kinds of taxation were imposed. He said that Kiang Nangbah, freedom fighter of the Pnars, fought against the Britishers over their policies and interference into the traditions,” Biam said in the Council, while adding that if the resolution is approved, it will affect the commoners, who are earning hand-to-mouth.
BJP leaders Dawan Lyngdoh and Krison Langstang walked out in protest just before the Council Chairman declared that the resolution was approved based on majority.
During the winter session of the JHADC, a bill to include Papang clan and Mynso clan in the right to contest the Dolloi election in Shangpung Elaka and Dolloiship was also introduced.
The JHAD Forest Policy 2020 was also table in the House.
The session will continue on Friday.
