New Delhi: The State Government is considering an increase in the minimum wages of daily labourers by Rs 30 in each category to bring it at par with the national level.
As per the Government’s plans, the minimum wages for unskilled, semiskilled and skilled workers will be enhanced to Rs 130, Rs 150 and Rs 170 respectively.
“We are contemplating this increase in wages taking into account the rising costs and other factors,” Deputy Chief Minister in charge Labour, Rowell Lyngdoh, said at the 43rd State labour ministers’ Conference in New Delhi on Thursday.
The minimum wages are fixed by the Government on the basis of the skills of the labourers along with the nature and the area where the work is performed. The last revision in the wages was done in 2009.
Lyngdoh also informed that besides the minimum wages, Meghalaya has already introduced various beneficial schemes for the labourers who are eligible for need-based insurance in case of contingencies like sickness, maternity, temporary or permanent physical disability leading to loss of wages etc.
