SHILLONG, March 24: Sports Minister Banteidor Lyngdoh on Wednesday said that Meghalaya has come a long way when it comes to sports, while assuring that the state government is committed to bring in more infrastructures to give sports scenario in state a facelift.
Lyngdoh was speaking during the foundation stone-laying ceremony for the construction of Multi-Purpose Indoor Sports Hall at Mawpat Community Compound, Shillong.
Informing that the project has been sanctioned for Rs 3.42 crore, the sports minister said that its construction is likely to be completed by 2022 so as to coincide with the golden jubilee celebration of Mawpat Sports & Cultural Club.
Lyngdoh maintained that the construction project is the realisation of a long-awaited dream of the people.
He exuded confidence that sports can bring about a visible change in the society as a whole because youths involved in sporting activities tend to distant themselves from anti-social elements.
The sports minister added that Meghalaya needs more such infrastructures to be able to produce quality sportspersons.
Meanwhile, Health Minister AL Hek, during the programme, beseeched the citizenry to work in tandem with the Sports department, “which will go a long way in building the capacity of the youth”.
