SHILLONG, March 30: Deputy Chief Minister Pretone Tynsong, on Tuesday, said that Meghalaya is keen on improving ties with neighbouring Bangladesh and is looking to invest more in building infrastructure including land custom stations and regulated border haats.
Tynsong was speaking during a reception programme hosted by the Assistant High Commission of Bangladesh, Guwahati, on the occasion of the Golden Jubilee of Bangladesh’s Independence and National Day at Asian Confluence, Shillong on Tuesday.
Tynsong, on the day, informed that the work for Shillong-Tamabil Road has just started and will be completed in three years.
He exuded confidence in the road to improve trade and commerce between Bangladesh and Meghalaya.
Pointing out that Meghalaya shares a huge international boundary with Bangladesh, the deputy chief minister said that the focus of the government is not only Dawki but the entire international border. The government wants to create more dedicated land custom stations and regulated border haats, he added.
The Meghalaya government has proposed not less than 22 such infrastructure facilities throughout the international border area in Meghalaya. In addition, it also has plans to improve land custom stations in Ranikor, Gasuapara and Umkiang.
Tynsong also said that in Pynursla constituency, people from not less than 40-45 villages have one of their feet in Bangladesh and another in India.
Meanwhile, Assistant Commissioner of Bangladesh High Commission in Guwahati, Dr Shah Mohammad Tanvir Monsur, remembered the brave souls who fought for liberation of Bangladesh during the programme, while also recognising India’s assistance to Bangladesh in 1971.
He added that during the liberation, many training camps were situated in Meghalaya and the state was directly involved in the liberation of Bangladesh.
