SHILLONG, April 3: KHNAM legislator Adelbert Nongrum on Saturday hoped to see a “positive outcome” on the issue of Khyndai Lad turning into a pick-up point for sex workers.
“I leave it to the wisdom of the state government now after having raised the issue in the Assembly. I hope this thing will see a positive outcome,” said Nongrum.
The North Shillong MLA had flagged his observation about sex workers during the budget session of the Assembly.
“It is not that I am condemning people who are involved in this activity, but people all around have witnessed the fact,” he said.
Pointing out that the government was initially reluctant to admit the issue,
Nongrum said: “Even as the government denied, things came out in the open after people involved in the activity made a confession.”
State Home Minister Lakhmen Rymbui had denied knowledge of the Khyndai Lad junction being a pick-up point for sex workers, but assured to look into the matter.
The Rot Association of Meghalaya, an organisation of sex workers reacted with an open letter seeking decriminalisation of sex work to ensure they do not face discrimination in law or practice.
“I do hope that the state government looks into it because these things need to be sorted out so that we can help those who are involved and need it,” Nongrum said.
