SHILLONG: Long queues of people waiting to pay their electricity bills in the MeECL office is a common scene throughout the year. However, to tackle the problem, the Corporation has now mulled to start e-payment and pre-payment which is expected to largely reduce the burden on the consumers who have to stand for hours to pay their electricity bills.

The plan has been mulled in view of the fact that large number of people come to pay their electricity bills on the due date.

MeECL pro EB Kharmujai said that the proposed initiatives of the MeECL would largely reduce the congestion in the office though it may take some time to fully implement the two proposed initiatives.

According to Kharmujai, under the pre-payment metering, people will have to buy a token from the office and after recharging their meters with the token, the meter will run for that particular amount of the token which the consumer will buy. “This service will be especially for Government establishments,” he said.

Reacting to a query on the congestion which is evident in the office, the official said that consumers usually pay their bills on the last date which adds to the congestion. He also said that there are payment counters in different places like counters of the axis bank where people can pay their bills.
