Guwahati: Six meritorious students from Assam left for the US on Tuesday on an a 14-day-long educational tour and exposure visit to the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA).

The six students — Gyandeep Sarmah, Bhaswati Deka, Suty Khound, Shahinoor Rahman, Parijat Priyadarshini and Priyanka Bezbaruah — are toppers in High School Leaving Certificate and Assam High Madrassa Examination conducted by Board of Secondary Education Assam (SEBA) this year.

A seventh student, Ratul Khan, who was also selected for the trip was unable to leave due to visa problem.

Khan, madrassa exam topper, failed to obtain a US visa despite repeated attempts by the government on his behalf. The matter has created a small controversy in the state.

It was not clear on what ground Ratul’s visa request was rejected.

Assam Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi handed over the flight tickets to the six students at a function on Tuesday. (PTI)
