SHILLONG: After pulling out of the race for Congress ticket, former MDP legislator from Nartiang Draison Kharshiing has expressed his desire to contest on a UDP ticket from Nongkrem constituency.

The former MDP legislator was prompted to take this step after the MPCC State Election Committee (SEC) had decided to recommend Congress MDC Lambor Malngiang’s name to the Central Election Committee (CEC) as the Nongkrem candidate.

Informing this, Kharshiing on Monday said that he met several UDP leaders including the party chief Dr Donkupar Roy in this connection.

According to former MDP legislator, he had decided to seek the UDP ticket after consulting his supporters.

When contacted, UDP working president Paul Lyngdoh informed that Kharshiing has joined the party.

“The first thing which is required to be done is to admit him (former MDP legislator) to the party. The decision of allotment of the party ticket would be decided at a later stage,” Lyngdoh added.

Meanwhile, reacting to news report appeared in The Shillong Times under caption “Congress accommodates most sitting legislators in list”, the MPCC president DD Lapang said that the party had not taken any decision on the allotment of tickets for the coming Assembly elections.

“The report is totally false and baseless,” Lapang said in a statement issued here on Monday.

Interestingly, this claim by Lapang is contradictory since the news report only mentioned names of the ‘probable candidates’ which had been recommended by the State Election Committee (SEC) to the CEC for approval.
