SHILLONG: The Food Corporation of India (FCI) has come under the scanner once again for providing putrid and rotten food items for delivery to the respective PDS wholesalers and the beneficiaries without any checking.

Acting on complaints from wholesalers and beneficiaries, CSWO president Agnes Kharshiing on Friday conducted a spot inspection at the FCI godown in Mawlai and found that over 500 sacks of wet and putrid sugar were stacked together along with the good ones in the same room.

“It is surprising that things like these go unchecked and un-monitored not forgetting the fact that the end receivers are the beneficiaries of these food items who are forced to accept rotten rice and sugar,” Kharshiing said.

She further stated that as per complaints lodged by the people especially in the suburbs, around 30 sacks of bad sugar are delivered together with the good ones and people are forced to accept both the bad and good ones.

When questioned about lack of monitoring, a technical staff at the FCI godown said that they have no other choice but to stack the good items with the bad ones due to lack of space. The staff and also admitted that they have been receiving bad quality sugar for some time now, and a complaint had been sent to Guwahati in this regard.

Kharshiing stated that she will write a report to the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) to seek its intervention and to constitute any inquiry into the matter.
