NONGPOH: The tussle for the prestigious Congress ticket from Umsning Assembly Constituency between sitting Nongpoh MDC Dr Celestine Lyngdoh and Meghalaya State Public Level Grievance Committee Vice Chairman Donlang Sohkhlet, has put the MPCC in a spot of bother as both the aspirants and their respective supporters have been making claims and counter claims of having support of the grass root workers of the party.

In one such attempt to ensure that the ticket goes to their candidate (Donlang Sohkhlet), a delegation of the Umsning Block Mahila Congress Committee, District Mahila Congress Committee Parental Body and Umsning Youth Assembly Congress Committee met MPCC president DD Lapang recently.

During the course of their meeting, District Mahila Congress president Cornilia Mawthoh said, “We told Lapang that Sohkhlet is acceptable to the general masses as he is easily approachable and understands the needs and inspiration of the people of Umsning Constituency, which is a newly created one.”

She also said that as per their assessment they found out that between Dr Lyngdoh and Sohkhlet, the latter has a better ‘percentage chance’ of winning the election.

According to political observers, the ongoing tussle for the Congress ticket, if not tackle immediately by party leadership, would only end up in division and separation of the party in Umsning constituency and would increase the chances UDP candidate and former Umroi MDC Field Marshall Mawphniang.

However, political observers also opined that Lapang would favour allotment of the party ticket to Dr Lyngdoh for his greater interest in Nongpoh Assembly Constituency since he might be a possible ’cause of trouble’ for Lapang in the forthcoming Assembly election.
